At Food For Hope, we often say that food nourishes the body — but dignity, connection, and kindness nourish the soul. Recently, during one of our food ration distribution sessions, we witnessed a beautiful moment that reminded us why this programme matters so deeply.

As part of the session, seniors from all races and backgrounds came together to learn and try their hand at writing traditional calligraphy. For some, it was their first time holding a calligraphy brush; for others, it was a skill they had not practised in many years. Despite different languages, cultures, and life stories, everyone shared the same curiosity, laughter, and sense of purpose.

Guided patiently, the seniors practised writing blessing words filled with gratitude, hope, health, and abundance. These were not written for themselves, but lovingly crafted for the volunteers and donors who have been supporting the Food For Hope programme. Words like “平安” (peace), “春” (spring), “福” (blessing) and “吉” (auspicious) slowly came to life on red paper, each stroke carrying meaning beyond the characters themselves.
What made the moment especially touching was seeing seniors of different races learning together — helping one another, asking questions, and celebrating small successes. The calligraphy session became a shared experience of learning, inclusion, and mutual respect, reminding us that gratitude transcends language and culture.
For many seniors, this was their way of saying “thank you”.
One senior shared softly, “I don’t have much, but I want them to know I am thankful.” Another smiled and said, “These blessings are for those who remember us.”
While our volunteers and donors give so generously of their time, resources, and care, the seniors wanted to give something back — through words written from the heart. These handwritten blessings carry more than ink on paper; they carry appreciation, dignity, and sincere well-wishes.
To all our volunteers and donors: these blessings are for you.
They are written with care and gratitude by seniors whose lives you have touched. Your support is felt, remembered, and deeply cherished.
From all of us at Food For Hope, and from the seniors you support, thank you for being part of this journey. May these blessings return to you many times over.
